Police in Matugga are holding a man suspected of killing his lover. He was picked up on Wednesday after the lifeless body of 25-year-old Stella Akwaso, a resident of Buwambo cell, Buwambo ward, Gombe Division in Wakiso, was discovered lying on her back inside her rented house.
According to Rebecca Nakandi, a close friend of the deceased, she knocked on Akwaso’s door in the morning after her daughter left for school but didn’t receive any response. Nakandi went to work, but when she returned around 5 pm with her daughter, they attempted to open the door again, still without any success.
Concerned for Akwaso’s well-being and with her daughter in mind, Nakandi, and the neighbors decided to break the outside padlock and peered inside, only to see Akwaso lifeless and they immediately alerted the authorities. Upon their arrival officers from Buwambo police station, faced the challenge of an additional lock on the inside of the door. However, during the process of examining the scene, an officer noticed feet under the bed.
“I saw the feet of the suspect and alerted the Chairman and the informant to keep outside for him not to escape. I told them not to tell anyone that the suspect was inside. I then picked more manpower under the guise of bringing a police truck to take the body,” a policeman said.
With the reinforcement of more police officers, the suspect, 27-year-old Herbert Kamoga, was apprehended. However, due to the anger of neighbors seeking retribution, the police had to fire several warning shots into the air to disperse the crowd and ensure the safety of the suspect. “We rushed him to Buwambo police station.
He was later taken to Matugga main police station,” the officer said. Nakandi and other neighbors expressed their confusion regarding the motive behind Kamoga’s intention. Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, confirmed that Matugga police, led by Assistant Inspector of Police AIP Charles Kirunda, had visited the crime scene to gather evidence and statements from witnesses.
