KAMPALA: The Electoral Commission (EC) on Monday, November 8, 2021, began displaying the National Voters’ Register in preparation for by-elections in several local government councils across the country.
The display of the National Voters’ Register, which will end on Wednesday 17th November 2021, shall begin at 8:00am and end at 6:00pm at all polling stations in the affected electoral areas, including weekends.
According to EC chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi, the purpose of the display exercise is to enable voters check for the correctness of their particulars on the Voters’ Register, confirm that their photographs appear against correct particulars and raise objections to the inclusion and/or removal of particulars from the register.
Other objectives are to report to the display officer those who have died, those who are under 18 years of age, those who reside or originate from a parish other than the one they are registered in; and those who appear more than once on the Voters’ Register.
“During the above display period, the Commission will also issue temporary Voter Location Slips (VLS) to voters, to enable them conveniently locate their respective polling station on polling day,” Justice Byabakama saod.
He added that after the display exercise, the lists of all persons recommended for deletion from the National Voters’ Register shall also be displayed for a period of six (6) days, that is, from 18th to 23rd November 2021 at the respective parish/ward headquarters within the said electoral areas.
“The purpose of this supplementary display exercise is to enable any person who may have been wrongly recommended for deletion to raise an objection to the Parish/Ward Tribunal,” he added.
The Electoral Commission (EC) has rolled out a programme for elections in 831 local government positions across the country whose main election calendar was disrupted and the places where the leaders have died.
The positions include; LC5 in Kayunga District where the elected leader was found hanged at his home. Other positions include 10 mayoral positions and 11 LC3 positions at cities, Municipalities, town councils and sub-counties. The rest of the 810 positions will be held at different local government levels.
The programme indicates that the elections for the special Interest Groups will take place on December 15 and the elections for the District Chairperson (Kayunga) and other Local Government Councils will be held on December 16.
