General Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s tweet in support of M23 rebels in DR Congo has drawn widespread condemnation, with the responders accusing the First Son and senior presidential advisor on special operations of fanning genocide and escalating the conflict between the Congolese and the Tutsi.
In a tweet on Sunday, November 6, 2022, Gen Kainerugaba tweeted: “As for M23, I think it is very, very dangerous for anybody to fight those brothers of ours. They are NOT terrorists! They are fighting for the rights of Tutsi in DRC.”
“For my Congolese brothers, I can make peace between you and your brothers M23. Peace is what we need! No matter the colour, tribe, language or religion! God bless East Africa,” he added.
But this drew condemnation even from ruling party supporters.
The Deputy Kampala Resident City Commissioner in Charge of Nakawa Division, Herbert Anderson Burora, an ardent supporter and friend of Gen Kainerugaba, said he was not supporting this position.
“I disagree strongly. Even ADF has rights it fights for, that is why government of Uganda followed it up to the foreign land, Why should Congo allow M23? M23 should sTOP using Tutsi as a shield for its opportunistic actions. Instead, let M23 renegotiate its integration & coalition as it did before with the Congo government,” he said.
“Uganda’s position since 1986, has been to end rebellions basing in neighbouring countries to attack us, we cannot play double standards by promoting groups destabilizing neighbouring states. That is not our revolutionary state and political position,” he added.
Charles Rwomushana, a political commentator, said: “Muhoozi Kainerugaba drop that genocidal narrative. There are no Tutsi or Hutu Congolese. There are Congolese.”
Weird Confessions tweeted: “That Tutsi tweet.. There’s a cost to too much privilege. Indeed our country’s national policy is run like a Tik Tok account. Anybody that wants, chips in with their “knowledge”. But when everybody says and does whatever they feel like, isn’t it also a sign of flawed leadership at the top? No way a US Military General talks about anything politically volatile without consensus from the Pentagon and White House as a whole. So what should we say about our own country where we have to keep on apologizing for something menacing.”
Ley M. Muyaya, a medical doctor, said: “Why are you interfering in Congolese matters ? If they are truly Congolese why are they killing other Congolese ? The DRC does not have a problem with Tutsi they are our felloe… we have many Tutsi holding senior position in the government, parliament…. But M23=RDF”
