KAMPALA: The National Unity Platform (NUP) has declared Harriet Nakwede as the party candidate for the Kayunga LC 5 by-election.
The NUP Electoral Commission said it had conducted a survey on the ground and concluded that Nakiwedde was the best-suited candidate to win the election.
The commission vetted four candidates including Harriet Nakwede, Jamir Kamoga, Rajab Ssenkubuge and Fatumah Nakanwagi, a sister to the late Ffeffeka.
“You will recall that our district chairperson for Kayunga District Local Government Hon. Ffefekka Sserubogo passed on. This created a vacuum which necessitated a by-election that has been scheduled for December 16, 2021. The committee conducted vetting, and consulted the people of Kayunga through field visits and surveys. I accordingly announce that after the elaborate process, Hon Nakwedde Harriet has emerged the winner and she will carry the National Unity Platform flag in the upcoming election,” Ms Mercy Walukamba, NUP’s election management committee chairperson, said in a statement.
However, Kamoga, who is the son of the late Muhammad Ffeffeka Sserubogo, the former Kayunga district LC V chairperson, saying the process used to arrive at the flagbearer is unclear.
He accuses the vetting committee of conniving with the party principal to declare the winner without giving reasons for their decision.
