The Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) on Tuesday appointed Indian-born cricketer Abhay Sharma as the new head coach of the Uganda National Men’s cricket team, The Cricket Cranes, on a three-year contract.
Sharma replaces South African tactician Laurence Mahatlane who left the position in October 2023.
The 54-year-old new tactician boasts of a proven track record of success both as a player and coach. He previously worked as a fielding coach for India A, and India U19’s, and also had a tenure with India National Women’s Cricket Team and recently, coaching the Delhi Ranji Team.
In reaction to his appointment, Sharma he is very grateful to UCA for the “golden opportunity” to work with a bunch of Uganda ntalented cricketers. Having been in Uganda for a couple of days, he said it feels like his second home.
He said he is here to contribute to the team’s aspirations, including defeating the top sides at the ICC Men T20 World Cup.
Additionally, he intends to focus on developing the team and working with young cricketers. While Uganda Cricket has performed well over the last 12 months, there are areas like fielding that need to improve.
The Cricket Cranes managed to qualify for their maiden World Cup despite several challenges.
‘The Uganda Cricket Association board has pledged full support as I endeavour to leverage my expertise and bring further success to the team,” Abhay Sharma said.
