Teams preparing for the FUFA Women’s Super League have stepped-up preparations ahead of the start of the new season, which starts on February 5th, 2021.
The teams held a consultative meeting early last month and agreed to kick off the league in February 2022.
Talking to Uganda Radio Network, Rogers Nkugwa, the head coach of the Uganda Martyrs, revealed that his squad has been training for over a month now ahead of the start of the league. He made it clear that every player was in good shape.
Nkugwa also stated that the league’s new format will provide a good platform for increased competition.
Godfrey Nsigwire, the manager of Lady Doves FC, who are the defending champions, told URN that their participation in the CAF Champions League qualifiers in Kenya provided good exposure for their team.
Ivan Otim, CEO of the Kampala Queens, also told URN that their team has been training well with the new additions to the squad.Otim revealed that they have already signed coach Hamza Lutalo, who he believes comes to the club with a lot of experience.
We managed to add in a couple of new players and the new coach as well, whom we believe will help us. The team is now preparing well, and everything is going on well. ” Otim said
Among the key players that Kampala Queens also recently confirmed is midfielder Shamira Nalugya, who is currently with the u-20 team that is preparing for the World Cup qualifiers. Before Nalugya, they had already confirmed Zaitun Namaganda as their first signing.
In the same development, the FUFA 3rd Vice President, Nakiwala Kiyingi, confirmed that all the ten teams that will take part in the league have cleared the necessary requirements, including club licensing, among others.
Unlike the previous edition, the 2022 edition will be played in a league format, with each team playing against the rest of the league participants in a round-robin format on a home and away basis.Additionally, each team will host their home games on their home grounds.
The last edition was played in a tournament format where the teams were grouped into twos. Each group was comprised of five teams, where the top two teams from each group qualified for the playoffs and the last team in each group was relegated.
In the draught fixtures, ten teams will be battling in this year’s edition of the league. These include: UCU Lady Cardinals, Lady Doves, Uganda Martyrs, She Maroons, She Corporate FC, OLILA HS WFC, FC Tooro Queens, Kawempe Muslim Ladies, and Kampala Queens
The defending champions of the FUFA Women’s Super League after defeating the UCU Lady Cardinals 2-1 in the final played on May 5th, 2021 at the FUFA Technical Center in Njeru.
