KAYUNGA: Tempers flared at the nomination centre for the Kayunga district LC5 by-election on Monday, 29 November 2021 when the district Woman MP, Idah Nantaba, refused to be subjected to a search by police officers.
Nantaba was at the nomination centre to show solidarity with Mr Magid Nyanzi, an independent candidate in the by-election, whom she supports.
But when security personnel attempted to subjected her to a check before accessing the venue, she refused and also refused to wear a facemask.
“You dogs why are you harassing me?” She asked a police officer.
This incensed the police officer identified as Mr Francis Ariko who attempted to take a recording of Ms Nantaba. In turn, she tried to grab his phone.
“You have taken a video of me. Where are you taking it?” Ms Nantaba protested.
The exchange attracted other police officers at the nomination venue who later came and drew away the MP.
Ms Nantaba, who is not new to controversy, is supporting Mr Nyanzi, also the Kayunga Town Mayor, in the by-election. The LC5 seat fell vacant following the sudden death of FFeffekka Sserubogo, a National Unity Platform party member.
Ms Nantaba, who is also a former ICT state minister, fell out with the NRM leadership in the district and also won the Woman MP seat on an independent ticket.
NUP has fielded Harriet Nakwedde in the by-election that also has NRM and DP candidates.
