KAMPALA: State Minister for Sports, Danis Hamson Obua, has informed the new board of the National Council of Sports (NCS) what he wants them to do.
At Copper Chimney Restaurant in Lugogo in Uganda on Thursday, Obua started the board with Ambrose Tashobya in charge. He took the oath of office from Commissioner of Oaths Makmot Kibwanga and then started the board under his direction.
In an elaborate speech, Obua outlined his priorities that he says will be beneficial for the sports sub-sector. As you begin your new term in office, I urge you to consider the previous successes we have had globally, especially at the Olympic Games, where we are now ranked the second best country in Africa.
“Sports create a unique opportunity to transform the lives of young people, and we have to strengthen the position we have attained, “Obua said. Teamwork, transparency, stability, and accountability are some of the things he wants to improve for Team Uganda at all global and continental events.
Obua, who was happy that NCS had enforced rules by deregistering the Uganda Kickboxing Federation, warned that bickering must be put to an end.
We must deregister them if they do not follow their established guidelines. He feels that stability is vital in the sports sub-sector. “No one has the authority to provoke wrangles every day,” he argues, emphasising the need of stability in the sports industry.
Another person in charge of the Ministry of Education and Sports, Ketty Lamaro, said that they should speed up the process of writing a new sports policy, which they should also try to keep short.
According to Lamaro, two years is a short period for the board to do significant work. “You should consider giving the board at least three years.”
“You can’t do enough work in two years,” Lamaro stated.
