First Lady and Minister of Education Janet Kataha Museveni will on March 9,2024, grace the fundraising for the construction of a multipurpose hall at St. Maria Goretti Nagongera Girls Primary School in Tororo District.
The school, which is one of academic giants in the country, will be fundraising for a multipurpose building, which will house classrooms, library, offices, and a computer laboratory.
According to Sr Leticia Achieng, the school head teacher, the function starts 10 am with Holy Mass.
The school is located in Sesera Bendo, Nagongera Town Council, Tororo District, 20 kilometers from Tororo Town.
It is a Catholic founded school run by the Little Sisters of St Francis in St. Wilbrod Catholic Church Nagongera Archdiocese of Tororo.
Sr Achieng, the school head teacher, traces the origin of this vision to the founders; the Franciscan Missionary Sisters for Africa.
Mother Kevin, formerly Teresa Kearney, was born on April 28, 1875, in Knockenrahan, Arklovco Wicklow. She first left for Uganda on December 2, 1902, and arrived on January 15, 1903, as a Franciscan Sister of St Mary’s Abbey, Mill Hill, London.
In 1952 she founded the Franciscan Missionary Sisters for Africa.The 90-year-old school was started in 1931 by the Mill Hill Missionaries and the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of Africa (FMS). It started operating in 1936 and Mother Yakoba was its founding head teacher the convent started in 1933.
The school was established with the major aim of training girls in home economics and molding them into a holistic future mothers this has since then become the vision of the school.
The past head teachers of the school include Sr Yakoba White Sister, Sr Femya White sister, Mother Aloysuious, Sr Bonaventure, Sr Getrude, Sr Mary Mageret, Sr Celine, Sr Mary Angello, Sr Mary Conrad, Sr Rose Agolo and Sr Laeticia Achieng Aboth, the current headteacher (All Little Sisters).
The school’s current population is 1,447 pupils and 49 staff, both teaching and non-teaching.The school has since time memorial produced top pupils in the district.
