Strathmore University, a regional world-class university, has established the Strathmore Global Institute (SGI) in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania.
Under the theme of “Leadership Growth and Opportunities Prospects in Tanzania and the Region,” Strathmore University Business School’s (SBS) commitment to Africa leadership growth and development culminated in the launch.
Since Tanzania has one of Africa’s fastest growing economies with nearly 7 percent annual GDP growth since 2000, there is need for a sustainable leadership development framework, there is no doubt that there is a growing demand for effective and skilled leadership for medium and senior level professional managers in Tanzania. “SBS is committed to bridging the current skills gap by providing world class management and leadership programs in Tanzania” says Dr Caesar Mwangi- the Executive Dean of SBS.
SBS started as a programme in Tanzania in 2016, through a grant awarded by Financial Sector Deepening Africa, following which Strathmore has taken a proactive approach by establishing the Tanzania Leadership Development Academy.
And while the initial focus for Strathmore’s work in Tanzania was predominantly in the financial services sector, they have discovered that strengthening leadership skills, could help improve business in the country and also strengthen their prospects for sustainable growth and prosperity. Since then, the institute has worked with various organisations in developing leadership approaches that benefits both leaders and organisations.
This has made the University take a critical look at the emerging leaderships skills that are needed for Africa’s economic growth. by establishing a one stop shop for the universities’ services which includes academic, research, innovation, and executive education. Strathmore Global Institute (SGI) is a vehicle to be used by the university to manage the Africa’s economic expansion starting with Tanzania, SADCC and the rest of the continent.
“We are currently offering two types of programs namely- open enrollment programs and tailor-made programs. It is worth noting that our customized programs have gained significant popularity compared to the open enrollment ones. And we have been able to develop CEO Apprenticeship programme in partnership with Tanzania CEO Roundtable,” says Carl Wagner, Academic Director- SGI Tanzania.
