A 38-year-old Uganda Peoples Defense Forces (UPDF) soldier has been arraigned before the field court martial in Kisoro and charged with two counts of murder and attempted murder.
The soldier identified as Hamis Walimbwa is accused of shooting 18-year-old Zepherine Nizeyimana from an entertainment center in Nyarubande Village, Kisoro District, in June last year. The two reportedly had a disagreement whose spark remains unknown.
Walimbwa, attached to the Kibaya Army Detachment located at the Uganda-Democratic Republic of the Congo border of Nyarubuye sub-county, also injured his colleague, Private William Achia, who was trying to intervene and calm him down during the scuffle.
Walimbwa was arrested after the incident and taken to the UPDF 2nd Division headquarters in Mbarara for detention until today, when he appeared before a field court martial held at the Gatete Primary School playground in Rukundo Town Council.
Appearing before the court presided over by Colonel Rogers Kitwala, the court martial chairman for the UPDF’s 2nd division, Walimbwa was charged with murder and attempted murder.
