A two-year-old boy was hit by a stray bullet fired by Albertine regional police flying squad operatives on Wednesday.
The victim, Ltakabir Kyakuhaire, is a resident of Bulemwa village in Hoima West Division, Hoima City. Kyokuhaire was injured when the operatives opened fire while pursuing suspected car thieves in a Toyota Wish with the registration number UBB 533X.
The mother, Margret Atuhurra, claims she saw her son fall down and bleed after a stray bullet struck him. They immediately rushed him to Destiny Medical Center for medical attention.
Ashraf Kyakuhaire, the victim’s father, wants the police to compensate his child and also cater for the medical bills.
Innocent Kusiima, a clinical officer at Destiny Medical Center, says that although the child was severely injured in the head, he is responding well to treatment.
The Albertine region police spokesperson, Julius Hakiza, apologized for the incident.According to Hakiza, after the incident, the flying squad operatives pursued the suspected car thieves and recovered the stolen vehicle, which was abandoned in the Kasingo cell in Hoima West Division.
