Police in Kapchorwa district are investigating the circumstances under which an expectant mother and her four-year-old son were burnt to death in their grass-thatched house while sleeping.
The Sipi Regional police spokesperson, Fredmark Chesang, says that the two people who died were Joy Chemutai, who was 25 years old, and her 4-year-old son, Jonathan. Both of them lived in Matingot Cell, Karasa ward, Eastern Division in Kapchorwa Municipality.
Chesang says that the event happened around 2 a.m. on October 25, 2022, and that the police were notified by the brother of the person who died, Joel Yeko.
According to Yeko, he got the door locked as he tried to rescue the victims from the blazing fire. “It was hard, and I could not handle it since it had spread to the entire house,” Yeko said.
A family member who didn’t want to be named said that Chemutai had a fight with his parents on October 24 when they found out she was pregnant for the second time while she was still in their care.
The deceased’s bodies are at Kapchorwa Hospital Mortuary pending postmortem.
