Five of the ten people who were killed by unknown assailants in Kamwenge District have been identified. The attack occurred on Monday in Kyabandara Parish, Kamwenge Sub County.
According to the Rwenzori West Police Public Relations officer, 10 assailants, armed with SMG riffles attacked Kitehurizi trading center. They hacked to death six people who were found guarding a maize farm and four who were hiding in a shop.
Twesige says that the assailants later broke into the store of Richard Baguma and stole 300kgs of beans, a sack of Irish potatoes, three trays of eggs, and 50Kgs of maize. They also set ablaze a motorcycle no.UFC 851T and headed to Kibale National Park.
According to Twesige, five of the victims include Night Margaret a female councilor representing Kyabandara Parish, another identified only as Munyarwanda, Esther Kiruhihura, Ruhangarinda, and Rowland Ainebyoona.
He said that the police are still establishing the identities of the five victims whose bodies were burnt by the assailants.
Isiah Byarugaba Kanyamahane, the Kamwenge Resident District Commissioner said that they have intensified deployment of the UPDF along the Kibale Forest National Park and in Kamwenge town.
Some residents of Kyabandara Parish are still in shock following the attack and they have called on the government to heighten security in the area.
Last week the Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) killed two suspected ADF rebels and captured their commander within the Kibale Forest National Park, in Kamwenge district.
Gen. Felix Kulayigye, the UPDF spokesperson, said that the rebels were among the escapees following the operation SHUJA conducted in the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
