Uganda’s U-20 team, nicknamed the Hippos, made a perfect start in the TotalEnergies U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers for the CECAFA Zone by beating their Tanzania counterparts 2-0 on Saturday (October 29) night.
Titus Ssematimba and Rogers Mugisha scored the goals for the Hippos in a game played in Khartoum, the Sudan capital where seven teams are vying for two slots to the AFCON Finals due next year in Egypt.
The Uganda Hippos are pooled in Group B with Ethiopia and Tanzania while hosts Sudan are in Group A with Djibouti, South Sudan and Burundi.
The best two teams from each group will qualify for the semi-final stage, while the teams that make the final will automatically qualify for the U-20 AFCON 2023 to be held in Egypt.
The Hippos will return to action on November 5 when they play against Ethiopia in the final group game.
