Uganda’s Jas Mangat won the 2022 Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally, which ended on Sunday, May 8 in parts of Lugazi sugarcane plantations.
Mangat, navigated by Joseph Kamya in a Mitsubishi Lancer N10, dominated some of the sections in the three-day event that attracted 49 drivers, including Africa’s best.
He clocked one hour, 23minutes and 33seconds to win the rally,followed by Zambia’s Lorey Gomes in a Ford Fiesta. Rwanda’s Gincarlo Davite came in third to complete the podium. The 2022 Uganda National rally championship (NRC) leader Ponsiano Lwakataka finished fourth.
This is Mangat’s second Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally victory, having won the 2016 edition of the event.
On Saturday (May 7), the rally had some of the big names such as Duncan ‘Kikankane’ Mubiru, Ronald Ssebuguzi and Omar Mayanja drop out due to mechanical breakdowns.
