KAMPALA: The Governor of Bank of Uganda (BoU), Emmanuel Tumusiime-Mutebile is dead.
Government sources have confirmed that Mutebile, who has been Governor of the central bank for the last 20 years, died from Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi on the wee hours of Sunday, January 23.
Mutebile was rushed to Nairobi in the first week of January after collapsing at his home on December 31, 2021.
According to sources, Mutebile was battling diabetes-related complications.
Charity Mugumya, the Bank of Uganda communications director, earlier said the Governor was in Nairobi on his routine medical checkup.
Governor Mutebile has been in poor health for the last half a decade.
In 2015, he was hospitalized in South Africa. Mutebile was on Saturday, March 28, 2020, admitted to Nakasero Hospital where he spent several days before gaining full recovery.
Mutebile was in January 2021 re-appointed as the governor of the Bank of Uganda for a fifth five-year term despite being frail for the last six years.
He was first appointed governor in 2001.
