Sometimes, there seems to be an inevitability to whatever happens in the world (que sera sera). It might seem that things must happen the way they were meant to be! Look at the cyclic nature of reality, for example. Or the transience of worldly goods (glory, fame, wealth, power). Or the fickleness of humanity. The one who enters triumphantly today ends up on the gallows later. The people shouting ‘oyeee’ today will be the same shouting ‘away with him’ tomorrow, with even greater gusto.
Yet, even in the face of an apparent inevitability, we still must acknowledge that God has given each one of us some power to act. The more consciously we apply this power, the better the world will become. We can choose, for example, to lay down our life for more life (or for a more glorious life). We can rightly, firmly, and in a dignified way, protest when we’re slapped unnecessarily. We can choose to do as much good as we possibly can, and avoid as much evil as possible. We’re encouraged that, ultimately, good will always overcome evil.
May Jesus Christ, who voluntarily lays down his life for us, grant us better life, even unto eternity.
