Equatorial Guinea has qualified for the knockout stage of the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations 2021, which is currently taking place in Cameroon.
The Nzalang Nacional qualified following a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Sierra Leone this evening at the Limbe Omnisport Stadium in Group E.
Palblo Ganet’s strike in the 38th minute proved decisive for the Equatorial Guinea squad. Ganet took advantage of a fast free kick by José Machn and placed the ball beyond Sierra Leone goalkeeper Mohamed Nbalie Kamara.

Machn had came near in the fourth minute, but his attempt was stopped by the Sierra Leone goalie ten minutes later.
Before the interval, the Leone Stars also had Kei Kamara and Kei Kamara come close.
After the break, the Sierra Leone Stars came out fired and surged forward to attempt to square the score. However, the Nzalang Nacional defended admirably and closed out the gaps.

The Leone Stars had defender Steven Caulker miss the target after 73 minutes.
After 85 minutes Sierra Leone were awarded a penalty after Issa Kallon was felled in the box. But they failed to make good use of the penalty as Kei Kamara stepped up, but his shot was blocked by Equatorial Guinea’s goalkeeper Jesus Lazaro Owono Ngua.
The two teams continued to create scoring opportunities, but the Equatorial Guinea team stood firm. Iban Salvador came close for Equatorial Guinea with two missed chances.

The Sierra Leone team came to the match in need of a clear victory to progress to the round of 16. Nzalang Nacional now qualify for the round of 16 after finishing second in the group behind Cote d’Ivoire who humbled Algeria 3-1.
Equatorial Guinea reached the semi-final stage at the AFCON 2015 when they hosted. They did not qualify for the 2017 and 2019 Editions of the AFCON held in Gabon and Egypt respectively.
