KARAMOJA REGION: Members of Paliament from the Karamoja subregion have appealed for the government to intervene immediately by supplying food to impacted households.
Hon. Faith Nakut, a Napak woman MP, highlighted that matter of national importance about serious food shortages in the Karamoja subregion.
Hon. Nakut urged government to prioritize the issue and not focus on meetings and procedures, arguing that the issues of meetings and procedures should be set aside in order to convey food to needy areas. There were claims in the media Tuesday that residents in the Karamoja subregion were dying of famine.
In her prayers, she requested that the Prime Minister’s office procure food from wherever it might be obtained and deliver it to Karamoja’s starving people. She voiced concern about the high levels of hunger in the Karamoja subregion. She also warned that hundreds of people are starving and will die if nothing is done.
The Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja, told parliament on Monday that Cabinet convened and reviewed situatiion in Karamoja. She went on to explain that Cabinet directed the Finance Ministry to prepare a budget of Shs 135 billion to provide food for at least three months as well as seeds for people to sow.
“As you know, almost 200 metric tons of food have already been delivered to the region to ensure we secure them from insecurity,” Hon. Nabbanja said.
Thomas Tayebwa, the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, has requested Prime Minister Hon. Robbinah Nabbanja to come in Parliament on Thursday this week with a full agenda of urgent measures.
