Former Members of Parliament from Rukungiri District Roland Mugume Kaginda, and Betty Muzanira on Sunday evening sustained injuries after the car they were travelling in overturned on the Masaka-Mbarara Highway.
The Toyota Harrier they were travelling in overturned at Lwera, between Lukaya and Katonga Bridge.
According to former FDC President Kizza Besigye who reported the accident, the two politicians were shaken by the ordeal but did not suffer life-threatening injuries.
“Rukungiri former MPs, Hon Roland Kagyinda and Hon Betty Muzanira survived a terrible accident in Lweera, between Lukaya and Katonga bridge today (Sunday) afternoon. They sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Our prayers for quick recovery,” said Dr Besigye.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation by police.
Kaginda served as Rukungiri Municipality MP from 2016 to 2021, while Muzanira unsuccessfully contested the Rukungiri Woman MP seat in the 2021 elections.
According to the 2022 Uganda Police Force (UPF) annual report, the country registered 20, 394 cases of road accidents in 2022 compared to 17,443 registered the previous year. Out of every 100 crashes, 22 people died while 61 percent of all accidents were a result of reckless driving.
There were 2,517 road traffic deaths recorded in hospital records from 2020 to 2021. Among these, 26% (662) occurred in Kampala, 50% (1,266) outside the city’s boundaries, and 23% (589) in undocumented locations. The linkage and capture-recapture analysis included only deaths from crashes documented to have occurred in Kampala.
