As more than 60,000 pre-Primary, primary, and secondary schools prepare to resume the academic year for the 3rd Term on Monday, September 18, the Ministry of Education and Sports says the government has already availed Shs.109.71 billion to the respective local governments to cover capitation grants for UPE and USE.
Of the released amount, UPE’s share was Shs61.49 billion and Shs. 48.24 billion for USE.
According to Dennis Mugimba, the ministry of education spokesman, the money released is 33 percent of the annual budget of Shs. 329.16 billion for both universal education programs implemented in 12,433 primary schools and 1,260 USE secondary schools (excluding the 10 in KCCA) across the country.
“The Shs. 109.71 billion was released in July 2023 entirely for 3rd term. The funds should already have hit the bank accounts of the beneficiary schools by now. For clarities sake, the funds for the 2nd term that just ended were released in April 2023,” Dr Mugimba said on Sunday
Any school that hasn’t received its proportion should immediately contact the respective responsible officer (accounting officer) of that Local government, he stressed.
