KAMPALA: Uganda Police have arrested three people believed to be part of the chaos at Makerere University during the last guild Presidential open campaigns at rugby grounds Makerere University.
Hon. Frank Kabuye who is detained at CPS Kampala, Allan Ssekidde currently detained at Wandegeya police station and Muzafaru Kabuurwa who is detained at Old Kampala police station were arrested after Police investigated circumstances under which Bewotti Betungura, 27, a student of law at Uganda Christian University, Kampala Campus and resident of Kikoni Zone B, Makerere 3 Parish Kawempe Division in Kampala was murdered on Thursday evening during a campaign scuffle between the NUP and FDC supporters.
ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Spokesperson Kampala Metropolitan said it is alleged that the fight was between the NUP and FDC Political factions. “The NUP team led by Kabuye Frank turned violent after a disagreement, leading to the stabbing,” he added.
Revealing details of the horrifying incident, Owoyesigyire said upon reaching the scene Police found blood stains believed to be for the deceased inside Nsibirwa Hall where he hid there after the scuffle that led to his stabbing.
As of now, Police have cordoned off the area and statements are still being recorded and CCTV footages will be retrieved to aid in the ongoing investigations to have other suspects traced.
Meanwhile, Makerere University indefinitely suspended the ongoing elections for the 88th Makerere University Students Guild leadership.
A letter from Lorna Magara, the Makerere University Chairperson of Council reads that management shall investigate all cases of violence in the electoral campaigns for the 88th Students Guild leadership and report to the Council for appropriate action.
“The Council will convene in an emergency meeting on Friday 15th July 2022 to consider further actions to address student indiscipline and violence at the University,” added the letter.
