FORT PORTAL: The Fort Portal Catholic Diocese has been selected to animate the Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations at Namugongo this year.
The Fort Portal Diocese was selected by the Uganda Episcopal Conference, a body that unites Catholic bishops in Uganda.
Fort Portal Diocese Bishop Robert Muhirwa described the move as a special privilege.
He has now invited the church leaders in the Diocese to a meeting due on Wednesday, February 23, 2022, in preparation for the day.
The Martyrs’ Day celebrations on June 3 of every year always attract tens of thousands of pilgrims from across the world.
However, for the last two years, the celebrations were held scientifically due to the impact of COVID.
At the 2021 celebrations at the Catholic shrine, the celebrations were scientific and saw 200 guests in attendance, including bishops and government leaders serving in different capacities. Among these were the deputy Speaker of Parliament and the Bukedea District Woman Member of Parliament.
However, with the full reopening of the economy, this year’s celebrations are expected to be graced by the usual big numbers.
