KAYUNGA: Although no specific threats were directed towards the electoral process in Kayunga district and the general security situation seems to be calm according to Police reports, 81 suspects have been arrested for various electoral offenses.
Sezibwa Region Police Spokesperson, ASP. Hellen Butoto in a press statement issued on Thursday revealed that the arrests were made after Police picked credible intelligence about groups that were being mobilized to cause violence and disrupt the voting process.
Butoto noted that among the detained suspects are four Members of Parliament (MPs), who she listed as Lubaga South’s Aloysius Mukasa, David Kalwanga(Busujju in Mityana district), Charles Tebandeke for Bbaale Constituency, and David Serumaga for Makindye Sabagabo who she said was arrested on allegations of voter bribery, while the other three were detained for campaigning beyond the deadline, disobedience of orders and for violating the curfew provisions.
“Majority of the suspects were mobilized and ferried to Kayunga, from Makindye, Kawempe, Rubaga, Nabweeru, and Wakiso. They are being processed for further court action,” Butoto said in a statement.
“We want to remind all residents in Kayunga, that their safety is guaranteed. Our tactical response teams are effectively deployed to deter and counter any acts of criminality and lawlessness in the district,” she added.
