KAMPALA: Mathematician Prof. Paul Edward T. Mugambe, the founding Chairperson of the Uganda Mathematical Society and President of the Uganda National Academy of Sciences (UNAS) has emphasized the need to improve the performance of Mathematics subject across the country.
Speaking during the International Conference on Computational Dynamics and Mathematical Modeling held at Kampala International University (KIU) main campus in Kansanga, Kampala, Prof. Mugambi said that being the queen of sciences, Mathematics was back in the days, filled with stories of both boys and girls having a hard time trying to learn the subject.
“The challenge used to affect both the boys and girls and we discovered that the problem was the teachers. The teachers were not well trained, something that we are addressing gradually“, he added.
Delivering the Vice Chancellor Prof. Mouhammad Mpezamihigo’s speech, Assoc. Prof.Janice Busingye, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Finance and Administration acknowledged the relevancy of the mathematics conference, emphasizing the fact that the conference offers an avenue for interactions with academicians, researchers, and other stakeholders.
The Vice Chancellor’s speech also reaffirmed the great importance of mathematics in our daily lives, with a special example of how it contributes to economic development.
To improve performance in the subject, Vice Chancellor Prof. Mpezamihigo said there is need to make mathematics more desirable to the younger generations despite the challenges faced by learners.
