South Sudan’s exiled activist Wani Michael has criticized the government for not prioritizing the construction of a road to Western Equatoria which is considered by many citizens as one of the country’s breadbaskets.
The prominent activist in a tweet yesterday claimed that failure by the government of President Salva Kiir Mayardit to build the road is a sign that it is “full of tribal or regional bigots” and as such has instead chosen to construct the first paved highway to Bahr el Ghazal region.
“I don’t know why government is absolutely not prioritizing constructing roads leading to the food baskets of South Sudan,” Michael said.
“If this government isn’t full of tribal or regional bigots why not prioritize the roads leading to Western Equatoria that can link to Greater Bahr El Ghazal through Wau?
“It is well known to any South Sudanese that Western Equatoria State is one of the major food baskets for South Sudan, but they lack access to market due to roads connectivity challenges. Another major food basket is Renk in Upper Nile State,” he added.
Michael’s comments come as South Sudan is facing a severe food crisis. The United Nations estimates that 7.8 million people in South Sudan are in need of food assistance.
The government has said that it is working to improve the country’s road infrastructure. However, Michael said that the government’s actions do not match its words.
