It will be a case of Senegal’s Lions of Teranga clashing with The Three Lions of England in one of Sunday (December 4)’s round-of-16 games at the going FIFA World Cup Finals in Qatar.
African champions Senegal, whose national team is fondly nicknamed the Lions of Teranga, dare England (the Three Lions), who are former world champions and were semifinalists at the lion edition of the tournament in 2018 in Russia.
In the run up to this clash, England won their group (which included Iran, Wales and USA) with seven points while Senegal emerged from Group A (Qatar, The Netherlands and Ecuador) with six points.
This is the first-ever meeting between the two nations.
In the other match on Sunday, defending champions France will play Poland in an all-European clash in which the French have an upper hand following their impressive group stage performance.
Meanwhile, The Netherlands and Argentina booked their quarterfinal date on Saturday (December 3) after eliminating the USA and Australia respectively.
The Netherlands defeated USA 3-1 while Argentina, inspired by Lionel Messi, edged Australia 2-1 to set a highly-billed quarterfinal match on Friday, December 9.
It will be Virgil van Dijk, the Dutch skipper and one of the best defenders in the world, against Messi, the Argentine skipper and arguably the best striker of this generation.
