Saturday, April 1@4pm:
KCCA v Maroons
After inspiring the Uganda Cranes to a crucial 1-0 victory over Tanzania Taifa Stars in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, KCCA FC striker Rogers Mato is bracing for Saturday’s league match against Maroons FC.
Mato, who scored Cranes’ solitary winner against Tanzania on March 28 in Dar es Salaam, is expected to lead KCCA’s goal-hunt against Maroons in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League match slated for Fools’ Day (Saturday, April 1) at the Phillip Omondi stadium, Lugogo.
And Mato is not taking the game for a Fools’ Day joke. Speaking at the pre-match media briefing on Friday, March 31, Mato stated: “I am ready for the game against Maroons. I know they are not easy opponents but like everyone expects we shall do our best to win and keep the title chase on course.”
Before Friday’s league game between Busoga United and SC Villa in the late kickoff, KCCA were leading the 15-team table with 35 points from 16 games. SC Villa were second on 34 points, meaning victory for the Jogoos could see them topple KCCA for at least 24 hours.
Seventh-placed Maroons (with 25 points from 18 games), however, have been impressive this season thus far. For instance, they beat KCCA 1-0 in the reverse fixture last October at Luzira. They also drew with former champions URA FC (2-2) and Express FC (1-1) in their recent games.
Meanwhile, Bright Stars host URA FC in the other match scheduled for Saturday at Kavumba Recreation grounds.
