KAMPALA: Just moments after gaining temporary freedom after two weeks of arrest, Former Forum for Democratic Change Party President Dr. Kizza Besigye has vowed to start from where he stopped in fighting against the failure to manage the situation of increased commodity prices.
Besigye made the statement on Monday evening shortly after being released from Luzira prison by Buganda Road Magistrates Court on a 3million shillings bail.
The four-times presidential candidate has been in prison since May 25, 2022, on charges of inciting violence, with Prosecution accusing him of going to Arua Park in Kampala City and making statements indicating the desire to demonstrate over rising commodity prices.
However Besigye who is said to have used a mega phone to incite the traders, denied the charges and he was asked to pay 30million shillings cash by Buganda Road Court Grade One Magistrate Siena Owomugisha which he successfully challenged in the High Court.
Shortly after being released on a 3 million shillings cash bail as directed by the High Court, Besigye told Uganda Radio Network a news partner agency of the Kampala Report that he [Besigye] is unshaken by the two weeks he has spent in prison, adding that freedom fighters never give up.
He added that despite a struggling Ugandan economy, President Yoweri Museveni is still living a luxurious life in that his Statehouse spends about 2billion shillings a day which if put to proper use can benefit many of Ugandans.
He has also described the 3million shillings he paid to get bail as a lot of money, saying that he has previously been given non cash bail on capital offenses such as terrorism, rape and treason.
According to Besigye, he is not satisfied with this order too and he is going to discuss with his lawyers to see if it can be challenged further.
Currently, Besigye has been driven to his home in Kasangati in Wakiso District in a Ugandan police vehicle which picked him as he exited the Court premises.
