JINJA: The Archdiocese of Tororo has chosen Jinja Catholic Diocese to animate the Uganda Martyrs Day for 2023.
This was announced by the Chairman of Uganda Episcopal Conference and Bishop of Kiyinda-Mityana Diocese, Rt. Rev. Joseph Antony Zziwa, in a Statement released on Saturday, June 18, 2022, at Nsambya- Kampala.
“A report on the national celebration of the Uganda Martyrs Day at Namugongo for 2022 animated by Fort Portal Diocese was also tabled for the Bishops’ discussion. As for the next celebration in 2023, Tororo Ecclesiastical Province was mandated to select the diocese to animate that event. The bishops from the said Province met and nominated Jinja Diocese to animate Uganda Martyrs Celebrations at Namugongo in 2023,” Bishop Zziwa announced.
This comes two weeks after this year’s Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations, which were animated by Fort Portal Diocese.
Bishop Zziwa also announced that St. Mary’s National Seminary, Ggaba will celebrate its Golden Jubilee on the 12th November 2022 while Fr. Dr. Giuseppe Ambrosoli will be beatified at Kalongo, Gulu Archdiocese on 20th November 2022.
He also announced the Synod of Bishops scheduled to take place in Rome in October 2023.
For this year’s celebrations, Fr. Edward Muhumuza, the chairperson of the Finance Committee, said Shs.500 million was spent towards the organisation.
The annual event pays homage to the 22 Catholic and 23 Anglican martyrs, who were executed for their faith on the orders of Kabaka Mwanga of Buganda between 1885 and 1887.
