KAMPALA: Gracing the 2023 International Research and Development Conference at Kampala International University (KIU) on Wednesday, October 18, the State Minister of Defense and Veteran Affairs Hon. Oleru Huda tasked scholars and researchers to find solutions to Africa’s problems.
Delivering her speech during the conference, Hon. Oleru noted that instead of relying on foreigners to come up with solutions to Africa’s challenges, African researchers should instead step in, research and come up with African solutions to African challenges.
“Everyone knows we have challenges in Africa. So, who else but universities to come up with solutions? Therefore, it is important that we have such conferences where we come up with solutions to our challenges as Africa,” said Hon. Oleru.
Hon. Oleru also challenged scholars and researchers to raise their voices and push for government funds to carryout research because it is the government’s responsibility to fund researchers.
“Yearly, government has been giving funding to Makerere University. Private universities also need to step up,” she encouraged.
Also speaking at the conference held under the theme; African Leadership and Development Challenges: The Role of Research, Innovation and New Technology”, KIU Vice Chancellor Prof. Mouhamad Mpezamihigo noted that the key role of the long awaited three-day conference is to bridge the gap between scholars, research and the people in community including the young minds and investors.
“Anyone can identify a problem. As a university, our key role is to generate ideas to solve these problems to attain a prosperous Africa based on sustainable growth,” he added.
In the wake of the Post-COVID_19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war, Africa as a continent, continues to grapple with wide-ranging issues from food security, climate change, peace and security, leadership, brain drain, to challenges associated with cultural diversity.
Having hosted this international conference that gathered researchers from all over Africa, KIU looks forward to coming up with possible African solutions to African problems as different researchers table paper presentations about various challenges and their solutions.
