Kumi – The Minister of State for Microfinance and Small Medium-sized Enterprises Haruna Kyeyune Kasolo has caused the arrest of a SACCO chairperson of Okanyapuru Parish, Ogoma Sub-county in Kumi district for allegedly demanding for sex from a female PDM (Parish Development Model) beneficiary.
Michael Ocuma, the SACCO chairperson found himself in hot soup after being accused by one Giripasio Odwongo; a person living with disability for demanding for sex and extorting Shs80,000 from his wife Janet Anyu.
Odwongo narrates that after his wife Janet Anyu gave the said bribe (Shs80,000) to Mr. Ochuma, he went further ahead to demand for sex from his wife. The accused however denies ever demanding for sex from Odwongo’s wife and even asking for money.
“I am a disabled person, and we, as disabled individuals, rely on women. He wants to take my wife,” Odwongo told this publication.
In his defence, Mr. Ocuma contended that he and Mr. Odwongo were clan members with pre-existing clan-related conflicts. He vehemently denied any wrongdoing and insisted that he is a married man with no interest in the spouses of others. Mr. Ocuma also raised questions about the credibility of the accusations and pointed out issues regarding Mr. Odwongo’s wife’s hygiene and alcohol consumption, stating: “His wife is a drunkard who doesn’t bathe. How could I be interested in such a woman?”
The district police commander (DPC)Kumi district Buyinza Twaha said that statements have been taken from both the accused and complainants and investigations into the matter are ongoing to find out the facts.
Mr. Nelson Akol Elungnat, the LC5 Chairperson for Kumi district, stressed the importance of investigating various issues related to PDM, suggesting the possibility of fraudulent activities within its operations which would taint the image of the newly rolled-out government program.
Cases of sexual exploitation especially of women in Uganda are very common where many have to sleep with their bosses to get jobs and promotions at their places of work.
There have also been incidences of sex for marks in many of Uganda’s top public universities where mainly female students found themselves being lured into sex by their lecturers in the name of getting good grades upon graduation.
