Three staff from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development and two UPDF soldiers have been killed by suspected cattle rustlers in Moroto District.
According to Agnes Alaba, the Acting Director of Minerals in the Ministry, the incident occurred on Monday evening when the geologists were carrying out geochemical sampling in Lotisan Sub County. She says that after the airborne mineral survey, the Ministry sent a team to Karamoja to map the area.
The victims have been identified as Richard Kiggwe, a geologist; Edina Musiime, an intern from Makerere University; and Charles Olwenyi, a local liaison officer. The identities of the UPDF soldiers are unknown.
John Robert Adupa, the LCIII Chairperson for Lotisan Sub County, says that leaders in the area were not informed about the presence of the officials.
Michael Longole, the Police Spokesperson of Mt. Moroto Region, says that the bodies were recovered by security personnel and have been taken to Moroto Regional Referral Hospital.
He says that the army and police have been dispatched to the area to gather more information about the incident.
