LUWEERO: Msgr. Francis Xavier Mpanga, the newly elected Kasana-Luweero Diocesan Administrator, had no desire to become a priest. Following his election on Friday, he revealed this in his inaugural speech at the Bishop’s residence on Sunday.
The Kasana-Luweero Diocesan Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Cyril Kasigwa, announced Mpanga’s election by the Diocesan Board of Consulters on Saturday night. It came after Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere was installed as Archbishop of Kampala.
During the event, His Excellency Most Rev. Luigi Bianco, the Papal Nuncio to Uganda, announced that the Diocesan Administrator would be elected by the Kasana-Luweero Diocesan Board of Consulters. Msgr. Mpanga revealed to journalists that he had never considered becoming a priest.
He says he wanted to be a religious brother since he was a child. A religious brother is a member of a Christian religious institute or religious order who commits himself to following Christ in the consecrated life of the Church, usually through the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience.
A brother might practice any secular occupation. According to Msgr. Mpanga, he only admired religious brothers and wanted to become one. He explains that he wanted to join the congregation of Brothers of Christian Instruction because he had stayed with them and admired their lifestyle all through his infancy to the completion of his primary level of education.
He explains after P.7 that when they announced that those who wanted to become priests should go for interviews, he went and passed. The interview results prompted him to change his mind.
Erasmus Musisi, the Diocesan Treasurer for the Laity, says that he is optimistic that the diocese will still run well because Msgr. Mpanga is fit for the current position.
