The motion seeking to impeach the four Commissioners of Parliament over the Shs1.7 billion service award has gained momentum after the leaders revealed that only one signature is left to enable them to table it in the House for debate.
Tororo Woman MP Sarah Opendi and her Kalungu West counterpart Joseph Ssewungu told journalists on Wednesday that some disgruntled Parliamentary committee chairpersons appended their signatures after being replaced.
In a significant reshuffle, the Government Chief Whip, Hon. Denis Hamson Obua, on Tuesday announced the designation of new leaders and members to the sectoral committees of Parliament following rules 187 and 188 of the Rules of Procedure.
Opendi said Dr Emmanuel Otala, who has been the chairperson of the committee on natural resources, Abdi Chemaswet, the vice chairperson of the committee on East Africa, Judith Aryek, the chairperson of the Lango Parliamentary GTroup and Ronald Akuguzibwe of Buruli County, have appended their signatures to the petition.
“I want to inform the country that today we managed to collect four out of the five signatures and this means we are only left with one signature,” Opendi said.
“Our target is not only one signature but we want to raise more than one and we shall continue sitting on this historical table until when we get the necessary signature. Come and get the blessings of signing on the censure motion,” Ssewungu added.
Lwemiyaga County MP Theodore Ssekikubo is leading efforts to collect signatures for the censure motion against former Leader of the Opposition, Mathias Mpuuga, and three other former backbench commissioners – Solomon Silwany (Bukooli Central), Esther Afoyochan (Zombo Woman), and Prossy Mbabazi (Rubanda Woman) implicated in the controversial service pay.
The four aforementioned individuals are accused of sharing Shs1.7 billion under the guise of service pay, despite having served for less than a year in their roles.
Ssekikubo and team have encountered hurdles as they collected the signature, with the group accusing the accused of frustrating the process.
