The National Animal Genetics Resources Centre and Data Bank (NAGRC&DB) has appealed to individual farmers and large farmer organizations to come and buy their animal feed at subsidised prices.
The animal feeds are being sold at the nine NAGRC&DB farms and ranches worldwide. They are; Aswa, Got Apwoyo, Maruzi, Kasolwe, Lusenke, Rubona, Ruhengyere, Sanga and Nshaara.
According to NAGRC&DB, one kilogramme of silage costs only Shs500; one bale of Chrolis Gayana hay, which weighs 17kg, costs Shs10,000; one kilogramme od assorted animal feeds (poultry, cattle, dairy) costs Shs1,500.
NAGRC&DB says all payments are to be made to Stanbic Bank on Account No: 9030005915731.
“NAGRC&DB will NOT accept any cash payments,” management said in a statement.
The animal feeds are a culmination of the large scale growing of maize and soybean by NAGRC&DB across its farms and ranches nationwide in a bid to boost food and animal feed security in the country.
NAGRC&DB was responding to Cabinet’s adoption of a paper by the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, on strategic interventions to boost food security in the country.
They planted about 12 square miles of corn and soya bean across their nine ranches spread across the country. Of these, 5,646 acres were of maize grain, 1,329 acres of maize silage, while 600 acres were of soybean.
The demand for high quality pasture seed for development of livestock feed resources is increasing rapidly in Uganda. This demand is fuelled by the expanding beef and dairy production occasioned by the increased demand from rising population and improved income particularly in the urban centres. Availability of adequate and good quality pasture seed is critical to meet the expanding meat and milk demand in the country.
NAGRC seeks to fulfil its role of supporting the Parish Development Model (PDM).
The PDM aims to lift the 39% of Uganda’s population from the subsistence to money economy and has seven pillars of; Production, Storage, Processing and Marketing; Infrastructure and Economic Services; Financial Inclusion; Social Services; Mindset change; Parish Based Management Information System; and Governance and Administration.
In these pillars, NAGRC supports Production, Storage, Processing and Marketing.
