The battle for the StarTimes Uganda Premier League title climaxes on Saturday, May 27 in the season grand finale round of games. SC Villa are just one win and 90 minutes away from ending the 19-year title spell while rivals Vipers and KCCA FC will be praying for the Jogoos to slip-up.
SC Villa, who last won the league title in 2004, opened up a slim two-point lead on top of the 15-team table after beating Blacks Power FC 1-0 on Tuesday, May 23.
Top marksman Charles Bbaale scored the lone winner at the Muteesa II stadium Wankulukuku for Villa to assume the top spot with 52 points from 27 games.
On the same afternoon, second-placed Vipers and third-placed KCCA stuttered after drawing 1-1 and 0-0 with BUL FC and Busoga United respectively.
That means Vipers and KCCA are tied on 50 points apiece but separated by goal difference, with the former on 22 and the latter on 16.
On Saturday (May 27), tt will be a winner takes-it-all situation for SC Villa, who host former champions URA FC at Wankulukuku.
The Jogoos, who still hold the record of winning most league titles at 16, need victory over URA FC to seal their 17th title.
For Vipers, the chances of retaining the league title are not entirely in their hands. But the Venoms must beat Busoga United at Kitende in the last game of the season and pray that Villa and KCCA lose their matches on the same day.
On the other hand, KCCA will be out to defeat Bright Stars at Lugogo and pray that both Villa and Vipers lose their games.
