State Minister for Finance in charge of Planning Amos Lugoloobi has been arrested in connection to the iron sheets saga.
According to his relative, Kayunga Woman Member of Parliament Aidah Nantaba, Lugoolobi is being detained at Kira Division Police Station.
When the Kampala Report visited the police station on Friday evening, we found the minister’s car parked in the compound and many police officers surrounding the station.
It was not immediately clear what he would be charged. However, he is expected to spend the weekend in prison and appear in court on Monday.
His arrest comes just hours after he returned 600 iron sheets to the Office the Prime Minister (OPM) stores in Namanve.
The State Minister had earlier on Friday appeared at the CID headquarters for interrogation.
Lugoloobi was one of the beneficiaries of the iron sheets meant for the Karamoja region and had used the same to roof an animal shed at his farm in Kayunga. He later removed the iron sheets from the shed following public criticism.
His arrest also comes after President Museveni called upon the line agencies to swing in action and arrest those culpable in the iron sheets saga.
President Museveni also directed that those who took iron sheets should refund them in monetary value, while those found guilty of using them for personal gain will face political action.
His arrest came on the day the Karamoja Affairs Minister Goretti Kitutu was granted bail after spending a week in prison after being charged with two counts of causing loss of public property and conspiracy to defraud at the Anti-Corruption Court.
Ms Kitutu was charged alongside her brother, Mr Micheal Naboya Kitutu, who is accused of receiving stolen property between June 2022 and January 2023 at Situmi Village Bukhawekha Sub-county, Namisindwa District. It is alleged that the iron sheets he received were feloniously obtained.
