A fire broke out early Tuesday morning at Keshwala factory and beverages depot in Walukuba ward in Jinja City Southern division. The cause of the fire is currently unknown but it was reported to have started at around 4:30 am when most casual laborers were leaving the premises.
As of 8:00 am, huge flames and smoke were still visible, and firefighters were on the scene attempting to contain the situation. Although the factory administrators are yet to release a comprehensive statement about the situation, an anonymous firefighter reported that the affected area has several highly flammable substances, which has exacerbated the situation despite the application of foam to contain the fire.
According to James Mubi, the spokesperson for the Kiira Region, fire brigade teams from both the police and well-wishers have contained the fire from spreading throughout the factory premises. The plastics manufacturing plant, spare parts stores, and the transport department were severely affected by the fire, but efforts to ascertain the exact losses are currently underway.
Mubi confirmed that the night-duty casual laborers, as well as the sodium silicate plant and administration blocks, were not affected by the fire. However, they have intensified their firefighting efforts to ensure that the situation normalizes before the day ends.
