The national football team, Uganda Cranes, will be out to revive their chances of appearing at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Finals when they play against Tanzania Taifa Stars in a crucial qualifier on Friday, March 24.
It is a make-or-break game for the Cranes, who are currently bottom of Group F, with just one point after two matches. Group F leaders Algeria (six points) host second-placed Niger on the same day, March 24 in Algeria.
The Cranes, who pitched camp in Egypt since March 20, must beat their East African neighbours in Ismailia on Friday and avoid defeat in Dar es Salaam on March 28 to revive their chances of qualifying for the Finals.
Uganda opted to host the game at the Suez Canal Authority stadium in Ismailia due to lack of a CAF-approved stadium in the country. It is a controversial decision to play thousands of miles away from home, but the local football governing body, FUFA, insisted it was the best option available.
Meanwhile, African champions Senegal will also be in action Friday when they host Mozambique in Dakar. The Lions of Teranga, as the Senegalese national team is nicknamed, welcome back inspirational skipper Sadio Mane. The Bayern Munich star missed out the FIFA World Cup in Qatar last November due to injury.
