Ashraf Mandela scored Vipers’ first goal from open play in eight games as the Venoms rallied to a draw 1-1 and went on to eliminate Wakiso Giants 4-3 on post-match penalties to reach the Uganda Cup quarterfinals.
Newly-appointed coach Alex Isabirye also made a winning debut in the round-of-16 match played Tuesday, March 14 at the Kabaka Kyabaggu stadium.
Vipers sacked their Brazilian coach Beto Bianchi last week after seven games in which the Kitende-based side hand not scored a single goal in open play. Isabirye took charge of the club on Sunday, March 12.
In Tuesday’s game, Mandela equalized after 79 minutes after Sharif Kimbowa put Wakiso Giants ahead on 47 minutes for the game to end in a 1-1 stalemate.
Hillary Mukundane, Bright Anukani, Martin Kizza and Abdu Lawal converted for Vipers in the penalty shootout while Wakiso Giants’ Tom Matsiko and Norman Ogik missed their kicks.
Action continues on Wednesday, March 15 with former Cup winners Express FC host Paidha Black Angels in the round-of-16 game at the Muteesa II stadium, Wankulukuku.
Holders BUL FC will play Onduparaka FC at the Green light stadium in Arua on the same day.
