QUARTERFINALS
Uganda Hippos v Nigeria
Uganda’s U-20 football team, the Hippos, finished top of Group B after drawing 0-0 with South Sudan on Sunday night to book a quarterfinal date with Nigeria at the ongoing U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (U-20 AFCON) tournament in Egypt.
Nigeria finished runners-up to Senegal in Group A, with the former getting six points compared to the latter’s nine points from three games.
The Hippos garnered five points from three group matches after beating the Central African Republic (CAR) 2-1 and drawing 2-2 with Congo Brazzaville in the earlier games.
Congo Brazzaville, who also drew 0-0 with CAR on Sunday, collected five points but organisers resorted to toss of a coin to decide the top two positions in Group B between Congo and Uganda.
The Uganda Hippos were picked first from the pot to finish top and will play Nigeria in the quarterfinals.
If the Hippos beat their Nigerian counterparts, they will automatically qualify for the FIFA U-20 World Cup tournament. All teams that reach the semifinal stage automatically qualify for the FIFA U-20 World Cup.
The Hippos were losing finalists at the last edition of the U-20 AFCON Finals in Mauritania. They lost 0-2 to Ghana’s Black Starlets in the final.
