Uganda Cranes will be looking to seal their first-ever quarterfinal berth at the African Nations Championship (CHAN) Finals when they play Ivory Coast in the last round of Group B games on Sunday, January 22.
Despite appearing at the CHAN Finals for the sixth consecutive time, the Cranes have never gone beyond the group stages of the tournament.
However, there’s a realistic chance for the Cranes to make it out of Group B at the ongoing 2022 CHAN Finals if they avoid defeat at the hands of Ivory Coast in Sunday’s tie at Algiers stadium in Algeria.
Going into the game, the Cranes lead the group standings with four points after drawing with DR Congo (0-0) and upsetting Senegal (1-0) in their last games. Ivory Coast, meanwhile, have just one point from two games following their loss (0-1) to Senegal and a draw (0-0) with DR Congo
The Cranes need at least a draw to progress to the quarterfinals. Speaking at a pre-match media conference on Saturday, Uganda Cranes coach Milutin Micho Sredojevic said his boys will approach the game like ‘another cup final.’
Meanwhile, hosts Algeria and Mozambique booked their quarterfinal places on Saturday night after emerging from Group A as winners and runners-up respectively.
Algeria beat Mozambique 1-0 to win the group with nine points from three games. Despite the loss, Mozambique finished second on four points, having won and drawn their earlier games against Libya and Ethiopia respectively.
Libya beat Ethiopia 3-1 in the other group game but the result was not enough to help them progress.
