Senegal v Uganda Cranes
RESULT: Algeria 1 Ethiopia 0
The Uganda Cranes take on Senegal’s Lions of Teranga in a crucial Group B match at the going 2022 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Libya, with the odds against the Cranes as they bid to qualify for their first-ever quarterfinal berth in this tournament.
And to emphasize the importance of the match against Senegal, Milutin Micho Sredojevic, the Cranes coach, rallied his players to go out and play like they are in a cup final.
“For me, this match is like a cup final; we must play to win and this is what I have asked my players to do. Our opponent is big name but they also have vulnerable points that we must exploit,” Micho said at a pre-match media conference on Tuesday, January 17 in Annaba.
Following their 0-0 draw with the Democratic Republic of Congo on January 14, the Cranes have one point while the Lions of Teranga lead Group B after their 1-0 victory over Ivory Coast in the opening game last weekend.
The Cranes, who are appearing at the CHAN Finals for the sixth consecutive time, have never gone past the group stages of the competition.
Meanwhile, hosts Algeria became the first team to reach the quarterfinals after beating Ethiopia 1-0 on Tuesday night in the Group A match. With an earlier victory over Libya in their opening match, the Algerians top the group with six points and will play the final group game as a formality.
