Justice Ruby Opio Aweri, a judge of the Supreme Court, has died at Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala at the age of 69, according to Chief Justice Alfonso Owiny-Dollo.
“The Judiciary family mourns the death of Justice Opio Aweri, who was described by many as a towering legal intellect who served the bench for nearly four decades with boundless dedication, humility, and commitment. Without a doubt, the nation will miss his outstanding service, “Chief Justice Owiny-Dollo stated in a statement released by the Judiciary.
Justice Opio Aweri joined the Judiciary as a grade one magistrate in 1983 and rose through the ranks to become a Justice of the Supreme Court, a position he held until his passing.
Justice Opio Aweri, a judicial officer by profession, was appointed to the High Court in 1998 and elevated to the Court of Appeal in 2015. At the time of his death, he was the Chief Inspector of the Judiciary Courts.
“We pray to God to comfort the family during this difficult time. A detailed funeral schedule will be sent out at a later date, ” Chief Justice Owiny-Dollo said in a statement that came out on Wednesday.
