African champions Senegal restored the continent’s hopes at the ongoing FIFA World Cup by beating hosts Qatar 3-1 in the Group A match on Friday, November 25.
The Senegal team, nicknamed the Lions of Teranga, became the first African nation (of the five representatives) to win a game at this year’s tournament.
They lost the opening match 0-2 to The Netherlands last weekend but the victory over Qatar means the Lions of Teranga are now back in contention for a place in the round-of-16. They will need to beat Ecuador in the last group match earlier this week.
Ecuador held The Netherlands to a one-all draw in the match played on the same day.
Hosts Qatar are, meanwhile, out of the tournament having lost their opener 0-2 to Ecuador last Sunday, November 20. The Qataris will only fight for pride when they play The Netherlands in the final group tie.
Elsewhere, England and the USA drew 0-0 to leave Group B’s race for the last-16 wide open after Iran upset 10-man Wales 2-0 on Friday. England lead the group on four points followed by Iran with three and USA are third with two points.
Bottom-placed Wales (with one point) will play England while Iran battle the USA in the final group games next week.

Action continues on Saturday, November 26 with Lionel Messi and his Argentina side in focus when they play Mexico in the late Group C match. This is because former champions Argentina lost (1-2) their opener to Saudi Arabia and another defeat could send them home at the group stage. Saudi Arabia will be up against Poland with hope that they can pull off another shock result and advance to the last-16 for the first time.
In Group D, Tunisia, who held Denmark to a goalless draw in their opening game, take on Australia in the lunchtime kick-off match on Saturday. Denmark face defending champions France, who go into the game with high spirits following their 3-1 win over Australia in the group opener.
