RESULT: Cameroon 0 Switzerland 1
Swiss striker Breel Embolo was torn between celebrations and sorrow after scoring the only goal that sunk his native Cameroon in Thursday (November 24)’s Group G opening game at the going FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar.
Embolo, who was born 25 years ago in Cameroon before his mother moved with him to Europe, struck after 48 minutes to give a perfect start to the Swiss in this World Cup tournament.
He did not celebrate the goal; he only raised his hands in a remorseful gesture. In a pre-match interview, Embolo confessed to being a big Cameroon fan because of his deep family ties with the west African nation.
Cameroon, quarterfinalists at Italia 90 and one of the five Africa representatives in Qatar, created some decent chances but lacked precision.
After Thursday’s lunchtime defeat, Cameroon now face an uphill task in their remaining games against former champions Brazil and Serbia if they want to progress from the group stage.
