Police have launched an operations all those operating cars dubbed ‘Drones’ as PSV taxis in Kampala without licences.
Faridah Nampiima, the spokesperson of the Traffic Directorate of Police, said the owners have up to Wednesday, November 16, to get licences or they face arrest.
She said only vehicles with a checked band will be allowed to operate as taxis.
“All those operating drones as PSV taxi especially along Entebbe Road and Jinja Road yet your vans don’t have the required license to do that and also your vehicles don’t have a checked band to operate as taxis should stop it immediately,” she told journalists in Kampala on Monday, 14 November 2022.
She called on all those who want to operate as taxis to comply with the requirements by going to the Ministry of Transport and Works, register and license your vans to operate as PSV taxis.
“You have been given two days by Wednesday 16th Nov 2022 we are starting our operations and all those who will be arrested under this operation will be taken to court. None of them will be issued a EPS ticket,” she warned.
This comes as police continue a nationwide crackdown on errant boda boda cyclists without key requirements such as permits, reflector jackets and helmets.
“We are on day eight of the operation on motorcycles, mainly targeting crash/safety helmets and retro-reflective jackets. The operation has resulted in impounding 12,217 motorcycles country-wide in the last six days from 07th to 12th November 2022,” Nampiima said.
“A total number of 10,167 EPS tickets were issued to offenders while 2050 motorcycles are pending at the stations. This operation continues, we would Iike to thank the general public for their support, we equally thank the riders who have complied,” she added.
With schools closing on November 25, 2022, she urged school administrators to ensure that all school vans are in a good condition as they transport children back home.
