The police have impounded 134 motorcycles in Gulu City for violating several traffic guidelines. The motorcycles were impounded in an operation conducted on Monday that targeted riders without helmets, those carrying more than one passenger, those riding motorcycles under dangerous mechanical conditions, and those with expired permits and licenses, among others.
The operation was prompted by the alarming road accidents among motorists ahead of the festive season. David Ongom Mudong, the Aswa River Region Police Spokesperson, told URN that the traffic operation seeks to tame the rising road carnage within Gulu City.
The impounded motorcycles are parked at Gulu Central Police Station for screening. Patrick Okello, one of the boda boda riders, told URN that his motorcycle was impounded due to a lack of insurance. Okello, whose motorcycle is on loan, says he is yet to engage his loan officers to help bail him out.
